2007 SEASON
The season will begin with Shakespeare’s tale of the “merry war” of the sexes followed by Strindberg’s tale of a young student in a strange world of betrayal, sickness and vampirism; a rolicking take on Cervantes' story of chivalry and adventure; Shakespeare’s drama about a Jewish money-lender; and concluding with a spirited holiday production based on stories by O. Henry.
Much Ado About Nothing

One of William Shakespeare’s finest comedies revolves around two pairs of lovers, Beatrice and Benedick and Claudio and Hero. The main plot features obstacles to the union of the two young lovers, Claudio and Hero, while the love-hate relationship of Beatrice and Benedick features the "merry war" of the sexes. Benedick thinks he hates Beatrice but really loves her, while Beatrice thinks she hates Benedick but really loves him.

The Ghost Sonata

Written in 1907 by August Strindberg, The Ghost Sonata (Spöksonaten) is a Swedish play about a naïve young student who idealizes the lives of the inhabitants of a stylish apartment building in Stockholm. He makes the acquaintance of the mysterious Jakob Hummel, who helps him to find his way into the apartment, only to find that it is a nest of betrayal, sickness and emotional vampirism. The world, the student learns, is hell and human beings must suffer to achieve salvation.

The Wonderful Adventures of Don Quixote

Based on the famous novel written in two parts by Miguel de Cervantes in 1605 and 1615, The Wonderful Adventures of Don Quixote tells the tale of a young village woman's uncle who, after reading about chivalry, now imagines he is a knight himself named Don Quixote de la Mancha. Despite tearful concerns by his niece, Antonia, Don Quixote - with his good horse, Rocinante, and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza - ventures forth into the world for the sake of his imaginary lady, Dulcinea del Toboso, to right wrongs and challenge his arch enemy, the Knight of the White Moon. Meanwhile, Antonia has confided in her housekeeper, who seeks advice from the village scholar, Dr. Carrasco. Disguised as the Knight of the White Moon, Dr. Carrasco concocts a plan to bring Don Quixote to his senses. And the adventure begins!

The Merchant of Venice

The plot of one of William Shakespeare’s great dramas, often classified as a “comedy,” involves Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. Shylock has lost his beloved daughter when she elopes with a man who belongs to a virulently anti-Semitic society. Shylock seeks a literal “pound of flesh” from Antonio, the merchant of Venice, when he fails to pay the debt. Portia defends Antonio from Shylock's legal suit. Shylock ends by renouncing his faith and his fortune.

An O. Henry Christmas

Based on stories by O. Henry. In An O. Henry Christmas, according to Baker’s Plays, after escaping wrongful imprisonment, a mysterious storyteller enters an abandoned railroad spur on the outskirts of New York City on Christmas Eve in 1893. In exchange for some hobo stew, “O.P.” entertains a rag-tag mix of seemingly lost souls by spinning a few tales and, in the process, rekindles the spirit of giving. He magically transforms the crew into players to stage O. Henry's The Last Leaf, The Gift of the Magi and others. With wordplay, trickery and sentimental holiday fare, this is a heartwarming play that will be sure to rouse audiences with the spirit of the holiday season.
